Neighborhood Spotlight: Andersonville

One of Chicago’s more intimate neighborhoods, Andersonville is well-known for its urban charm, historic architecture and welcoming atmosphere. Located about 30 minutes away from downtown, it’s the perfect place for those who want a more down-to-earth Chicago living experience. A Brief History

In the 19th century, a community of Swedish immigrants settled down in the area, which at the time was considered a suburb of Chicago. When the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 ravaged most of the city, Swedish immigrants couldn’t afford to build new homes out of stone and brick inside the city limits, so they moved up to Andersonville. The neighborhood began to fill with retail stores, eateries, bakeries and churches. Eventually, other cultures and influences permeated the community, but Andersonville’s history is still sprinkled throughout its streets. What to Explore

Now, Andersonville is home to unique, locally-owned businesses, which gives it a distinct personality unlike any other in Chicago. Andersonville’s cluster of eateries and shops houses everything from Women and Children First’s bookstore, to Little Bad Wolf’s gastropub fare, to Lost Larson’s beautiful pastries, and more. Chicago’s Magic Lounge offers dinner and a spectacle, and is even hosting virtual events while temporarily closed during COVID-19. Andersonville has a range of condos, two/three flats and courtyard, many of which reflect the neighborhood’s historic charm. A mix of renters and owners alike, Andersonville is the perfect intersection of quiet, tree-lined streets and proximity to downtown. Because it’s a bit further north, prices on homes and apartments are reasonable. With fantastic walkability and a tight-knit sense of community, it’s no wonder so many people call it home.
