A Closer Look at Chicago Realtor Mario Greco

From Immigrant Roots to Law School

The profile covers how being the son of Italian immigrant parents influenced Mario’s path. Mario watched his father work hard as a public school teacher and driving instructor. His father always made time for Mario’s athletics and school events, no matter how busy. Between his mother and father, this experience shaped his view of family and hard work.

Mario took these lessons and values to Northwestern University, where he initially studied pre-med. After trying engineering, he eventually decided to go to law school. Mario said, “As the eldest son of immigrants, the expectations were clear: I was going to become a lawyer or a doctor.”

Discovering a Drive Outside Law

After earning his degree, Mario practiced law during the 1990s and early 2000s. While he explains that he eventually lost his passion for law, Mario views the experience as invaluable. He talks about how it provided structure and stability while helping him hone skills he’d eventually use in real estate. Over time, legal work felt less fulfilling, and Mario wanted to chart his own course. He wanted a career that offered more freedom, connection, and the ability to build something of his own.

The Transition to Real Estate

After encountering a fellow lawyer who also turned to real estate, Mario gained inspiration to make the transition. Initially, Mario investigated the possibilities in real estate while working full-time as a lawyer. However, he obtained his real estate license in January 2002. By September of that year, he had over $8 million in sales and no longer worked as an attorney.

While this early success was encouraging, Mario explains that there were challenges. His immigrant parents always valued stability. The risk of entrepreneurship cut against the grain of the security and stability his parents raised him to value. However, success taught him to manage risk, and he eventually founded MG Group. As a result, he now heads one of the top real estate firms in Chicago.
