Chicago is a city teeming with culture, art and experiences, and with many museums reopening safely this year, there’s plenty to do and see. If you’re looking for a few ways to expand your world close to home, here are some of the best upcoming Chicago museum exhibits.

Immersive Van Gogh Chicago

This incredible exhibit has already made big headlines across the country, and it makes the Germania Club Building in Gold Coast its home until late November. View Van Gogh’s most famous work in a completely untraditional way, projected onto the walls. If you check out tickets, be sure to do so in advance; this exhibit is selling out fast.

Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes

For comic and superhero enthusiasts, the Museum of Science and Industry’s Marvel exhibit is the ultimate collection of more than 300 artifacts including original comic book pages, sculptures, interactive displays and costumes and props from films. The exhibit also explores how the characters and stories have become so influential and iconic in pop culture. Tickets are available now, and the exhibit runs until late October.

Alexander Calder: Modern from the Start

Chicagoans might be familiar with Calder’s Flamingo Sculpture, but his work reached much further in the world of Modernism. Inspired by Calder’s time as unofficial ‘house artist’ at MoMA, the exhibit celebrates the artist’s expansive, multimedia career through works in paper, wire and wood, jewelry, mobiles and sculpture. The exhibit is up until early August, with timed tickets and virtual views.

Mandela: Struggle for Freedom

The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center’s latest exhibit features the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela and his fight against apartheid in South Africa. With immersive environments — including a replication of Mandela’s jail cell — the exhibition tells a compelling story of human rights on a global scale. In-person and virtual tickets are available until mid-September.
